By: E&P Staff Barack Obama dealt Hillary Clinton a perhaps mortal blow today, besting her by a fairly comfortable margin in the Wisconsin primary. He lead by about 56% to 43% with 40% of the vote counted.
John McCain, meanwhile, rolled to another easy win, virtually locking up the GOP nod. In his victory speeched he blasted Obama for his alleged inexperiece in foreign affairs.
Obama went on stage in Texas while his rival was still speaking at another site -- bumping her off TV. But he was appearing at a large rally and the logistics perhaps made this necessary.
NBC estimates suggest that Clinton has to win more than 60% of the delegates at stake in coming primaries to overcome Obama, an almost impossible task. In fact, she may even win in Texas but he could still get more delegates there due to party rules.
Exit polling shows Obama had a modest lead among whites and was splitting the women's vote with his rival. The Illinois senator also performed well with men and younger voters, middle-aged people and moderates while expanding his decisive leads with independents, college-educated, high income and very liberal voters.
The exit poll data showed Clinton's most pivotal backers were lukewarm in their support. Women split their votes almost evenly between Clinton and Obama, and about six in 10 men favored Obama.
