By: E&P Staff The Orange County Register of Santa Ana, Calif., launched a paid-subscriber Web model on Tuesday.
Premium OCRegister includes subscription to E-Register, which contains the newspaper exactly as it appears in print, including ads, and archives back to November of 2002. The service is available for $3.92 every four weeks or $48.36 a year.
"Consumers now have a choice on how they wish to subscribe to our newspaper -- in print, on the Web, or both," Ray Stafford, executive vice president and general manager of Freedom Orange County Information, publisher of the Register and OCRegister.com, said in a statement. "Premium OCRegister.com has enormous potential for growth as more people are using the Web to access information. Online subscriptions offer the exact same product as the printed newspaper, just a different mode of delivery."
OCRegister.com, the paper's standard site, will continue to offering breaking news and operate as a free service, with registration required.
The Register's statement also noted that the Audit Bureau of Circulation honors E-Register as a valid method for counting circulation.
The newspaper is using the ActivePaper product from Olive Software to produce the E-Register.
