OC Register Takes Tablet APP to TV Territory

Six months after the launch of its widely-followed tablet app, the Orange County Register is learning that recurring video features — namely two- to three-minute TV-style weekly “shows” about high school football, extreme sports and tech issues — are driving user engagement.

Users have also been drawn to the highly interactive daily feature, a magazine-like anchor story produced exclusively for the app, reported Doug Bennett, president of the Santa Ana, Calif.-based Freedom Interactive, the digital arm of Freedom Communications that produces the app. As projected, Bennett said usage is peaking in the evening hours, and the app is hitting its targeted 35-45-year-old demographic.
