By: E&P Staff Cory Wayne Sumner, a carrier for the Ocala (Fla.) Star-Banner, was arrested Thursday in connection with 11 burglaries of private homes on his route.
Sumner, 29, an Ocala resident, was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday by Marion County Sheriff's Office detectives, who told CBS affiliate WESH-TV in Orlando that they began looking into a string of burglaries near U.S. Highway 441 in the southeastern portion of Marion County in late February.
Detectives said they were alerted to the use of a stolen credit card connected to the burglaries, which helped lead them to the suspect. Among the stolen items found in Sumner's home, they said, were an iPhone, credit cards, a saddle, golf clubs, a generator, gift cards, bicycle, and a steam cleaner.
Sumner will face 39 charges, including nine counts of residential burglary, 10 counts of grand theft and five counts of unauthorized use of a credit card.
Ocala Star-Banner subscribers who believe they may have been burglarized by Sumner can contact the South Multi-District Office at 352-438-5940.
