Ohio 'Gay People's Chronicle' Goes Biweekly

By: Mark Fitzgerald Gay People's Chronicle, the Cleveland-based paper circulated throughout Ohio, has moved from weekly to biweekly publication.

In a front-page story in its latest current edition, staff reporter Anthony Glassman said the "worsening economy and lowering advertising revenues" made publishing 52 issues a year unfeasible. After reviewing options, including going online-only, the paper decided that with a biweekly publication schedule "much -- but not all -- of the fiscal shortfall can be ameliorated by publishing every other week," Glassman wrote.

"While it is a somewhat bitter pill to swallow after a decade of being Ohio's weekly LGBT newspaper, there is a silver lining to every dark cloud. This move puts the Gay People's Chronicle on firmer footing than it has been for years.

The staff worked without pay during the month of July, Glassman reported.

Gay People's Chronicle launched as a monthly newsletter in 1985, and went to biweekly publication in 1993. In 1998, it began publishing as a weekly.

Gay People's Chronicle made headlines during the presidential primary season earlier this year when Barack Obama ran a campaign ad in the paper and in a Texas gay newspaper. It was believed to be the first time a major party candidate had placed an ad in a gay newspaper. Gay People's Chronicle was also one of just three gay papers invited to a joint telephone interview with Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primary campaign.
