By: E&P Staff It's not every day that a undergraduate j-major makes news on the national stage. But Nick Juliano, a senior at Ohio University in Athens, turned the trick Thursday, when reports circulated about his interview with Sen. John Kerry over the weekend. His work even showed up in ABC News' famous online tip sheet for national political reporters, "The Note."
In the interview, during one of the candidate's frequent visits to this swingingest of swing states, Kerry backed off his recent assertion that there was a "great potential" that President Bush would reinstate the draft if re-elected.
"What I said was it's possible because I don't know what he's going to do," Kerry said in the interview, published in Monday's Ohio University Post. Denying that he was exploiting the fear of young men, he added, "It's not fear; it's a legitimate question mark."
According to the Cincinatti Enquirer today, Juliano may be the only "student journalist in the country to get an interview with either presidential candidate, campaign officials say." (Actually, a reporter for a high-school newspaper in Texas recently interviewed President Bush -- but that student journalist is the daughter of a top Bush campaign advisor.)
Juliano sat down with Kerry in his campaign bus Saturday while the Democrat traveled through southern Ohio.
The Enquirer's campaign calendar for the day also reflects the frenzied activities in the state:
? Kerry to hunt ducks and geese outside Youngstown, morning.
? University of Cincinnati's Institute for Policy Research to release Ohio Poll results on voter views on campaign issues, 10 a.m.
? The Rev. Al Sharpton and musicians Wyclef Jean and Foxy Brown to attend Rock the Vote rally, Wilberforce and Central State universities, Wilberforce, 11:30 a.m.
? Actress Sarah Jessica Parker to campaign for Kerry at Alchemize in Main Street district, Over-the-Rhine, 12:30 p.m.
? Kerry to give "major policy speech" on technology, Columbus Athenaeum, 1:30 p.m.
? Former Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan., to debate former Gov. Howard Dean at Miami University's Millett Hall, 6:30 p.m.
? Former Cincinnati Mayor Jerry Springer to speak at "Sound Off for Kerry," event, Southgate House, Newport, 10 p.m.
