Posted Monday, August 20, 2007 12:00 am

By: Two newspaper carriers waiting for their load were injured after being attacked by a man who was allegedly intoxicated.

Police in Tulsa say a 70-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man, both carriers for the Tulsa World, were waiting on newspapers about 2 a.m. yesterday when 27-year-old James Edward Montgomery allegedly attacked them for no apparent reason.

An arrest report indicates that Montgomery knocked the woman to the ground, then the man attempted to get between them. Montgomery then apparently severely gouged the man's eye.

Officials say the man may have to have reconstructive surgery. The woman suffered several bruises and scrapes and was treated and released.

Montgomery was booked on complaints of aggravated assault and battery and other offenses.

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
