Gary Garton, 60, a journalist in northeast Oklahoma, died Wednesday following a long illness, according to an obituary in the Miami News-Record of Oklahoma.
Garton worked for the NEO Norse Wind newspaper and the Miami News-Record before leaving for a position as a staff writer and copy editor at The Joplin (Mo.) Globe in 1978.
His former colleagues remember him as a good-humored workaholic who loved his job. According to Ed Simpson, editor of The Joplin Globe, staff members claimed Garton could write four to five stories a day because he worked 12 to 14 hours a day.
Simpson said Garton never cared about getting bylines, focusing his efforts on providing area news to readers. He called Garton a ""wonderful guy"" and said they ""could never begin to replace him.""
