'Oklahoman' Marks Cartoonist Jim Lange's Departure With Editorial and Story

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Daily Oklahoman ran an article and editorial about political cartoonist Jim Lange retiring after 58 years with the Oklahoma City-based newspaper.

Ann DeFrange's story said of Lange: "He created John Q. Public, a sort of Oklahoma Everyman whom Lange kept honest and frequently bewildered at the deeds of the state's politicians. But no matter how pointedly he jabbed at his subjects, they never resented him."

She quoted the cartoonist as saying: "I like to do it with humor. If you can get the public to laugh at somebody, you can do a heck of a lot more damage."

The article and editorial can be seen here and here.

E&P's Monday story about the retirement can be seen here. That piece quotes Lange's wife as saying her husband's departure from The Oklahoman may not have been entirely voluntary.

Lange, 82, drew about 19,000 cartoons and illustrations for the paper since joining it in 1950. He's also an original member of the 1957-founded Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.
