OnColor Eco Saves Ink, Improves Color at the 'New Mexican'

Posted
By: E&P Staff To achieve savings and better print quality, the Santa Fe New Mexican has installed ProImage OnColor Eco ink optimization software.

Calling the software a "set-it-and-forget-it system ... seamlessly integrated within our automated NewsWay workflow system," Systems Administrator Mike Campbell said in a statement that in processing 8,900 pages in the first 60 days, "we... are already averaging 15% ink saving" for in-house and commercial work on the company's KBA Comet and commercial Didde press. He added that OnColor Eco processing "also brought out additional clarity in color reproduction on many pages."

The software reports ink savings, but the New Mexican measured pounds of ink per ton of newsprint used before and after the software installation to verify the results.

Regardless of whether objects are RGB or CMYK, OnColor Eco automatically converts pages containing both pixel and vector data to the correct color space for optimal printing, while preserving the original color appearance.

The Smart Input Space Recognition algorithm ensures a close match between the output and the intended source space, even when the latter is unknown. It also normalizes all color content in both graphics and text, and protects pure colors, spot colors and the gray control bar.
