By: E&P Staff "Cul de Sac" today reached its first anniversary of syndication -- and the strip's list of about 200 clients makes it an unusually popular new feature at a time of newspaper cutbacks.
Richard Thompson's comic -- distributed by Universal Press Syndicate -- is about the life of a preschool girl named Alice Otterloop.
Universal said Thompson had been creating "Cul de Sac" for The Washington Post as a weekly feature since 2004, and that the strip went daily in that paper this June. Since 1997, the award-winning Thompson has also done the weekly "Richard's Poor Almanac" cartoon feature for the Post.
The art and writing in "Cul de Sac" have been praised by many cartoonists, including reclusive "Calvin and Hobbes" creator Bill Watterson, who wrote the foreword to a new collection of Thompson's comic. "Cul de Sac: This Exit" is being released this month by Andrews McMeel Publishing, a sister company to Universal.
