By: E&P Staff While print advertising keeps taking it in the chin, online advertising continues to shine: The Newspaper Association of America reported that ad revenue for newspaper Web sites grew 23% to $638 million in Q3 compared to the same period a year ago.
For the first nine months, online ad revenue increased 30%.
?Publishers have generated more than 5% of their total advertising dollars through their online properties since the beginning of the year, demonstrating that newspapers are monetizing their strong online properties,? said John Sturm, president and CEO of NAA, in a statement. ?This is our tenth consecutive quarter of double digit online ad spending increases and we expect this upward trend to continue as publishers build brand loyalty with Internet properties that consumers and advertisers value.?
Print advertising for Q3 fell 2.6% to $11.1 billion. Retail slipped 0.3% to $5.3 billion. National dropped 8.3% to $1.7 billion. Classified declined 3% to $4.1 billion. Within the classified category, real estate rose 10.5% to $1.3 billion. Recruitment and auto plummeted. Help wanted was down 10.1% to $1.1 billion and auto fell 11.7% to $968 million. Other classified slipped 0.5% to $694.5 million.
