Online Ad Spending Drops 17%

By: Ann M. Mack (Adweek IQ) Online spending declined 17.1%, to $2.1 billion, for the first three quarters of 2001, compared to the same period in 2000, according to the latest figures from CMRi, the Internet division of CMR.

Auction site eBay edged out recurring online spending leader General Motors. For the first three quarters of 2001, the auction site spent $35.7 million, while the automaker spent $35.5 million. Providian Corp. spent $23.6 million while Amazon.com spent $22.9 million. Other big spenders included Classmates Online, Barnes & Noble, AOL Time Warner, J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank One, and Vivendi Universal.

Yahoo! continued to dominate Web site revenues, bringing in $284.4 million during the first three quarters. That number, however, represents a 8.6% drop, from $311.2 million, during the same timeframe a year ago. AOL and Excite generated $252.6 and $118.2 million in revenue, respectively. Among the other top earners were Lycos, Netscape, Altavista, Webcrawler, ESPN.com, MSN, and Weather.com.
