Online News Not Denting Australian Print Newspaper Circ, Publishers Group Says

By: E&P Staff Australian newspaper circulation is falling only marginally and appears not to be significantly affected by online news sites, according to the industry group The Newspaper Works.

The group made its comments Thursday as the Audit Bureau of Circulations released figures showing the sales of metro daily newspapers fell 1.6% in the last quarter of 2009 compared to the year-ago period.

Newspaper Works CEO Tony Hale told the Syndney Herald that the 15.2 million papers sold each week in Australia represented a "phenomenal number in a country as relatively small as ours".

"I think you will find most of the newspaper people are pretty happy with the overall results," Hale said in the unbylined article.

Australia's best-selling newspaper in the fourth quarter was The Sunday Telegraph in Sydney, with 632,009 copies, a decline of 3.2%. per cent from a year ago. The Herald Sun in Melbourne was the nation's biggest weekday seller, with 514,000 copies, a decline of 0.3% from a year ago.

The Newspaper Works' Hale said online news sites in the past 10 years have "barely impacted" sales of print newspapers.
