By: E&P Staff The online-only Raleigh (N.C.) Telegram is asking its readers to kick in donations for its newsgathering efforts, and to help pay its annual dues to the North Carolina Press Association, where it is the sole general-interest online newspaper member.
"Like other newspapers across the country, we're offering our news on our Web site for free," Telegram Publisher R. Gregg said in a note to readers. "As we're providing a free service to thousands of readers each week through our journalist's efforts, hopefully that is of some value to the public and our readers."
Gregg said the Telegram was inspired by the example of other Web-only newspapers such as MinnPost and the Voice of San Diego. He noted the Telegram, like those sites, pays for professional journalists as well as publishing the work of volunteers.
"We would very much like to fund some additional reporters and any donations would certainly help towards that goal," Gregg said. Donations could also help offset the $350 dues for the press association, he added.
Donations are not tax deductible because the Telegram is a for-profit news organization, Gregg noted.
