By: Staff Reports Newspapers Among Founding Members

Twelve Internet content companies have established the Online Publishers Association (OPA) to represent their interests before the advertising community, the press, the government, and the public.

The founding members, which come from the newspaper, magazine, broadcast, and online-only industries, are CBS MarketWatch, CNET Networks Inc., Conde Net, ESPN.com, The Industry Standard, KnightRidder.com/Real Cities, MSNBC.com, New York Times Digital, Salon Media Group Inc., USAToday.com, Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, and Wall Street Journal Online.

Michael Zimbalist, the acting executive director of OPA and former executive director of ePod, said that OPA will work on proving the effectiveness of online advertising. He foresees working closely with the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) on advertising developments.

Zimbalist said that the OPA also will participate in the evolution of for-pay services online, which he believes will be the case for quality online content providers.

The OPA's guidelines for membership are currently being worked on with Industry Standard CEO John Batelle leading that effort. The cost of membership has not been made public.

Zimbalist said that he saw no conflicts with the Online News Association (ONA), which until now has focused mostly on issues regarding online news credibility amongst publishers.

The organization's Web site is http://www.online-publishers.org/.
