Opinion Editors Present Awards

By: E&P Staff The Association of Opinion Page Editors presented awards at its recent conference in Philadelphia.

Best Op-Ed Feature Award went to The Anniston (Ala.) Star for a column relating to the controversy over a Ten Commandments monument in a courthouse. Best Theme Page Award was won by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for a feature about evolution. Best Op-Ed Page Award went to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for an election spread.

Also, the Minneapolis Star Tribune received Best Series Award for covering early childhood education, The Dallas Morning News was cited for Best Overall Section for a "Texan of the Year" spread, and the Tom Wellman Award for Community Service was won by The Philadelphia Inquirer for focusing on the murders of 47 children.

In addition, the Phil Joyce Award for Service to the association went to former President Noel Rubinton of Newsday in Melville, N.Y.

The awards contest was sponsored by the association and Penn State University. The conference was hosted by The Philadelphia Inquirer and the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School of Communications.
