By: Staff Reports Former Arizona Republic Publisher Surfaces in San Francisco
After weeks of industry buzz, the Hearst Corp. Thursday officially named John Fredrick Oppedahl publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle, the rival Examiner reports.
Oppedahl resigned from The Arizona Republic, where he was publisher for four of his 11 years with the paper, on Oct. 27. Oppedahl originally moved to the Phoenix paper as managing editor.
Oppedahl's appointment comes six days before the San Francisco papers make their debuts under new ownership. Oppedahl will oversee the merging of Hearst's Examiner staff with the Chronicle's existing staff.
John Lavine, director of the Media Management Center at Northwestern University where Oppedahl took a month-long course five years ago, told the Examiner that the Center is assisting in the development of a new Chronicle.
