The Monitor, a Freedom Communications Inc. daily newspaper in McAllen, Texas, will become executive vice president and general manager of Freedom's flagship paper,
The Orange County Register.
Stafford, 54, will be in charge of day-to-day operations at the
Register, which is based in Santa Ana and has a daily circulation of 360,000. He will report directly to
Register Publisher Chris Andersen when he assumes his post Sept. 30.
Replacing Stafford in Texas is M. Olaf Frandsen, publisher of the
Appeal-Democrat in Marysville, Calif., and vice president of Freedom's Pacific Region, supervising papers in California and western Arizona.
Frandsen, 47, will retain his duties as a vice president, supervising Freedom's newspapers in Texas, New Mexico, and Missouri. He assumes his new post in November.
Frandsen has been publisher in Marysville for six years. He is a former editor of the
Odessa American in Texas and former political editor at the
Register.
Replacing Frandsen in Marysville is Maureen Saltzer Gawel. She moves from North Carolina, where she supervises three daily newspapers and other businesses as Freedom's eastern North Carolina communications president.
Saltzer, 43, will assume Frandsen's duties as regional vice president and publisher of the
Appeal-Democrat. She has been publisher of Freedom papers in Fort Pierce, Fla., and Victorville, Calif.
