T.J. Simers has joined the Orange County Register (Santa Ana, Calif.) as a sports columnist. Simers joins the Register from the Los Angeles Times, where he most recently served as a page 2 sports columnist covering Los Angeles’ professional and college teams, players and coaches.

During his nearly 23-year tenure at the Times, Simers extensively interviewed and wrote columns on local sports legends such as John Wooden, Kobe Bryant and Vin Scully. He has won awards for his unique brand of writing, including being named California Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 2000. Simers also served as the professional football writer for The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Denver Broncos beat writer for the Rocky Mountain News, a college football beat writer for The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, and in several sports editing roles for newspapers in New Jersey, Idaho, Wisconsin and Illinois.

“T.J. is a master at driving the conversation with his brand of humor and holding accountable those who deserve it,” said Todd Harmonson, Register sports editor. “Some sports fans love him; others love to hate him. But they read him and are passionate in their feelings toward him. When we had the opportunity to add his voice to a fantastic group of columnists that is led by Mark Whicker, we knew it was the right move. I look at our group of columnists and know we have a starting rotation full of aces that has to be considered among the best in the nation.”
