Oregon Resident Wins 'Science Idol' Cartoon Contest

By: E&P Staff Jesse Springer of Eugene, Ore., won the Union of Concerned Scientists' "Science Idol" cartoon contest.

The winning cartoon showed politicians shoveling dirt on the word "Truth" as scientists tried to unbury the "Truth." Springer received about 4,300 out of nearly 20,000 votes cast, according to Universal Press Syndicate.

Judges for the contest included editorial cartoonist Tom Toles of The Washington Post and Universal, "Doonesbury" cartoonist Garry Trudeau of Universal, and "Speed Bump" cartoonist Dave Coverly of Creators Syndicate. Four-hundred entries were narrowed down to 12 finalists.

Springer won $500 and a trip to Washington for lunch with Toles.
