'Oregonian' Asks Readers to Decide Fate of Comic Strips

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Oregonian, in a cost-cutting move, is reducing the number of its daily comic strips from 33 to about 23. Interestingly, at the same time, it will begin publishing the daily comics in color.

The paper is asking readers to vote on which comics are the most read to help the Oregonian decide which ones to keep. In a report today, the paper revealed that eight strips -- "Adams' Apples,? ?Dilbert,? "Doonesbury" (which, interestingly, runs on the comics pages and not the Op-Ed page), "Get Fuzzy," "Mother Goose and Grimm," "Pearls Before Swine," "Stone Soup" and "Zits" -- are already safe, due to their ongoing popularity.

Readers are asked to select their three favorite and least favorite from the page?s remaining comics, in an online poll here. Those voting by snail mail can send their votes to Comics poll, Newsroom, 1320 S.W. Broadway, Portland, OR 97201.

The survey will be up through March 3, after which the new lineup wil be announced. Executive Editor Peter Bhatia and JoLene Krawczak, managing editor for features, will make the final determinations.
