'Oregonian' Readers React After 'Abby' Dropped

Posted
By: E&P Staff More than 190 readers complained after The Oregonian of Portland canceled "Dear Abby," according to Public Editor Michael Arrieta-Walden.

But Arrieta-Walden wrote in a column yesterday that this was a smaller response than he expected. He noted that several hundred people reacted when the paper dropped overnight TV listings or when a popular comic has been pulled, and that more than 50 people thanked The Oregonian for canceling "Dear Abby." Still, said the public editor, the paper might have considered consulting readers before dropping the Universal Press Syndicate advice column.

The Oregonian replaced "Dear Abby" by increasing the frequency it runs "Ask Amy" from weekly to daily. Arrieta-Walden wrote that JoLene Krawczak, The Oregonian senior editor who oversees features sections, thinks "Ask Amy" is "more fully reported" than "Dear Abby." And Arrieta-Walden said Krawczak feels "Dear Abby" isn't as good now as it was when its original creator, Pauline Phillips, had written it.

"Ask Amy" is written by Amy Dickinson of the Chicago Tribune and Tribune Media Sevices.
