'Oregonian' Scores Scoop on Basketball Coach's Dark Past

By: A once-prominent Portland-area basketball coach charged with sexually abusing a female high school player was convicted of rape in the 1970s, when he was a juvenile.

The Oregonian newspaper reports that records it obtained from 1974 show that Howard Avery was convicted of rape when he was 17 and sent to a juvenile facility.

Juvenile records are typically off limits to the public. But there are exceptions when they are more than 25 years old.

The 51-year-old Avery had been a highly respected private coach in the Portland area who worked with promising young players both male and female, including future NBA players Damon Stoudamire and Mike Dunleavy Jr.

He's pleaded not guilty to the sex abuse charges involving the female high school player.
