By: E&P Staff Sankei Shimbun is replacing six doublewide presses with four Goss Newsliner 90 presses for increased flexibility and greater color capacity at its Hokusetsu Center in Osaka, which also prints the daily Sankei Sports.
The company visited Asahi Shimbun's Hanshin plant to evaluate its Newsliner 90 press for performance, efficiency and suitability.
Each new press will be configured as two five-high towers, two four-high towers, one folder and four reelstands. Goss' DigiRail digital inking system also will be included. Capable of printing 32 pages in full color, the presses are scheduled to be in production next year.
Adopting the five-high configuration with the fifth level being a mono unit with open fountain inking enables the company to obtain a specific color that is difficult to reproduce by full-color separation.
Part of the Fuji Sankei Group, Sankei Shimbun, headquartered in Tokyo and Osaka, is one of Japan's five largest national newspaper companies. A morning edition, its 2.2 million-plus circulation represents a steady increase of 7% over the past 5 years despite other newspapers' decreasing circulations.
