By: E&P Staff MediaSpan Media Software, Melbourne, Fla., and Ann Arbor, Mich., has completed installing Jazbox content management for all Ottaway Newspapers dailies.

Jazbox features a consistent, intuitive, database-centered structure that conforms to each paper's needs, allowing for change and modifications to workflow in the midst of the production cycle.

"We felt that the people from MediaSpan were always working with us and listening to us so that Jazbox continued to develop over the two years we worked on these installations," Ottaway Vice President of News Ken Hall said in a statement.

Ottaway's 13 sites, some of which publish more than one paper, operate from new IBM RS/6000 servers with built-in fail-safe provisions to ensure the paper always gets out. Pagination relies on Adobe InDesign and InCopy.

MediaSpan also said its Media Software unit will develop a global news publishing platform for Reuters, based on Jazbox editorial software. The system will enable journalists to assemble and deliver multimedia news packages incorporating text, pictures, graphics and video in seven languages to the agency's news media and financial-market customers, as well as to Web sites.

"Increasingly our customers demand that Reuters gives them a complete 360-degree view of stories, which pulls together all of the different elements of our multimedia news coverage" Thomas Defoe, Head of Product Management, Reuters News Production, said in a statement.

Already used by three major North American newspaper chains, an enterprise-level deal with Sun Media, Canada's largest news tabloid chain, also was recently announced. The group's Toronto Sun went live with Jazbox 3.2 in September. In the United Kingdom, the Press Association national news agency has used Jazbox since 2002.

New distribution features in Jazbox 4.0 were designed to meet the challenge of global news community via multiple servers deployed to handle delays of long-distance networks, saving bandwidth in the process.

MediaSpan editorial systems also were recently installed at the Cookeville, Tenn., Herald-Citizen, Fairbanks (Alaska) Daily News-Miner, Reno (Nevada) Gazette-Journal, St Louis Post-Dispatch and Taos (N.M.) News.

Ad systems went into: Alabama's Sand Mountain Reporter, Albertville, Times-Journal, Fort Payne, Scottsboro Daily Sentinel, and Rainsville Weekly Post; the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, Hilo, and West Hawaii Today, Kailua-Kona; the Franklin Times, in Louisburg, and Nashville Graphic, both in North Carolina; Cookeville, Tenn., Herald-Citizen; New Jersey Community Publishing, East Hanover; Tidewater News, Franklin, Va.; Herald Democrat, Sherman, Texas; and Waverly (Iowa) Democrat

The Asheboro (N.C.) Courier-Tribune and Journal-World, Lawrence, Kansas bought MediaSpan production systems.
