Outdoors-Themed Comic Strip 'Tundra' Reaches 300-Newspaper Mark

By: E&P Staff "Tundra," the outdoors-themed comic strip by Chad Carpenter, has added its 300th newspaper, the self-syndicated cartoonist announced Friday.

Produced in Sarah Palin's hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, "Tundra" began three years ago as a strip that ran in just six newspapers, all of them located in the 49th State.

The strip was passed over by several syndicates, Carpenter said, but then a friend, Bill Kellogg began pitching it directly to editors.

"It sells itself," Kellogg said in the announcement. "I just have to find a way to get it in front of the editors."

Among the newspapers that picked up Tundra are Los Angeles Times, New York's Daily News, The Denver Post and the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times.

"I used to dream of being in 100 papers," Carpenter said. "Now I've set my sights on 500."

Last year, Carpenter signed a deal to produce greeting card for Recycled Paper Greetings. Earlier this year, he reached a book and calendar deal with the publishing company Andrews McMeel. A book and a page-a-day calendar are scheduled for release this fall.
