By: Staff Reports Several Newspaper Projects Cited
(Photo District News) Photographer Chris Anderson's powerful black-and-
white images of Haitian refugees escaping their homeland for the
story "Desperate Passage" in The New York Times Magazine
won this year's Robert Capa Gold Medal Award. The award
recognizes the best published photographic reporting from abroad
that "requires exceptional courage and enterprise." Anderson
documented the refugees' perilous journey over sea to freedom.
Others cited for the award include Rafiq Maqbool of the
Associated Press and Agence France-Presse's Chris Gerald.
The photographers were recognized in the 62nd Annual Overseas
Press Club Awards ceremony in New York City. The OPC is America's
oldest and largest organization of journalists who cover
international news.
The Olivier Rebbot Award for best photographic reporting from
abroad in magazines and books was given to Eugene Richards, whose
work "The Global Willowbrook" was published in The New York
Times Magazine. Richards photographed conditions inside a
Mexican mental hospital.
Also cited are Ron Haviv from Saba for his "Blood and Honey: A
Balkan War Journal" (TV Books) and Ettore Malanca from Sipa for
his "Ethnic Fencing" story in The New York Times Magazine.
For best photographic reporting from abroad in newspapers or wire
services, The Washington Post's Michel duCille picked up
the John Faber Award. He documented the victims of Sierra Leone's
conflict. A runner-up was Toshihiko Sato of the AP, who
photographed the Concorde crash.
