By: Stuart R. Paddock Jr., 86, former chairman and publisher of the
Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill., died last week after suffering from heart problems, according to newspaper reports.
Paddock was a strong proponent of family-owned newspapers. The
Daily Herald reported that Paddock left his 51% voting control of the parent company, Paddock Publications Inc., in trust in order to prevent the paper's sale to a large chain.
Earlier this month, Paddock became chairman emeritus of the company. Douglas K. Ray became CEO and chief operating officer in January.
Paddock took over a small group of non-daily newspapers in the late 1960s and transformed them into the
Daily Herald, the third largest newspaper in Illinois with a circulation of 145,902, according to the 2001
E&P International Year Book.
