By: Mark Fitzgerald Reversing a recent pattern of flat or even declining circulation, the few remaining paid Spanish-language dailies reported solid gains in the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX.
The most spectacular gain was reported by Cuatro Communications-owned El Dia Houston in Texas, which jumped 37.7% to 10,365.
The big Spanish-language dailies, who had seen their circulation stall after a decade or more of fast growth in a swelling immigrant population, reported more modest gains.
La Opinion, the ImpreMedia LLC-owned Los Angeles paper that is the nation's biggest Spanish-language daily, increased by 0.5% to 123,447.
El Nuevo Herald, published by The Miami Herald, increased 1% to 86,898.
In recent months, two Spanish-language startups--Al Dia, published by The Dallas Morning News, and the Rumbo papers published in three Texas markets by Meximerica Media -- switched to free distribution. Tribune Co. has also converted its three Hoy editions to free distribution.
El Diario La Prensa, a paid daily, competes against Hoy in the New York City market, and managed a 1% circulation gain, to 50,603.
In Brownsville, Texas, El Nuevo Herald jumped 6.3% during the reporting period to a circulation of 7,637. Its growth outpaced parent Brownsville Herald, which was up 1% in the period to 17,404.
