Pakistan Orders Reporter To Leave

Posted
By: (AP) A reporter for The Washington Post left Pakistan on Friday after the government ordered him out, saying he had overstayed his visa.

The visa of Rajiv Chandrasekaran, a U.S. citizen, expired on Nov. 22 but he remained in Pakistan without getting an extension, officials at Pakistan's Information Ministry said.

E&P reported on the case on Tuesday. At that time, Phil Bennett, assistant managing editor for foreign affairs at the Post, said, " We think that not allowing Rajiv to stay is a mistake and unwarranted."

Chandrasekaran said he applied for an extension but it was not granted. The ministry said his application came several days after his visa had expired.

No charges were filed against Chandrasekaran, who is based in Jakarta, Indonesia, and had been reporting from Pakistan about the war in neighboring Afghanistan for two months.

"I very much look forward to returning to Pakistan in the near future to continue reporting here," Chandrasekaran said before departing from the Pakistani city of Lahore.
