By: E&P Staff Palm Beach (Fla.) Post Publisher Doug Franklin will replace Atlanta Journal-Constitution Publisher John Mellott when he retires on March 1, Cox Newspapers, the parent of both dailies, announced Monday.
Franklin will remain in his post as executive vice president of Cox Newspapers.
Franklin is a 30-year veteran at Cox. Mellott spent 22 years at the diversified media and auto auction company, and had been the Journal Constitution's general manager and vice president of business development for Cox Enterprises.
"Doug is a change agent and his outstanding track record with Cox uniquely qualifies him for the publisher role of the AJC," said Cox Media Group President Sandy Schwartz said in a statement. "He will bring fresh thinking and energy to the job while he continues the critically important work of transforming our newspapers in print and digitally."
In a memo to employees, Mellott said he is stepping down with "the full range of emotion."
"I have been truly blessed -- blessed to have spent the majority of my professional career with such a fine group of people," he wrote. "I leave knowing there is no finer organization. A company led by a smart, dedicated and honorable team. A company focused on the future, blessed with a unique heritage and the deep-rooted courage to serve. Most importantly, a company prepared for the challenges ahead."
