Pam Johnson Named Exec. Director of New Journalism Institute at Missouri

By: E&P Staff Pam Johnson will be the first executive director of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism, beginning Nov. 15. Her appointment was announced Monday by Dean Mills, dean of the school.

Johnson will be in charge of the Institute's three main areas: improving the practice and understanding of journalism, experimenting with new technologies for journalism and advertising, and workshops and programs focused on strengthening journalistic quality in democratic societies.

Johnson has served in executive and managing editor positions at The Arizona Republic and The Phoenix Gazette and as assistant managing editor at The Kansas City Star. She has also worked at The Joplin Globe and the Binghamton (N.Y.) Evening Press.

In addition to serving as president of the Associated Press Managing Editors and as a Pulitzer juror, Johnson helped found the Journalism and Women's Symposium and shared the 1982 Pulitzer Prize awarded to The Kansas City Star and Kansas City Times for coverage of the Hyatt Hotel skywalks collapse. She was awarded the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism in 2000.
