By: E&P Staff When Healy Media Inc. settled a trademark lawsuit back in October, it agreed to change the name of its Spanish-language daily newspaper in San Diego, Calif., by the end of the year.
Monday, Diario Latino hit the streets as Diario San Diego.
The paper's editor and president, Jos? Santiago Healy, said the name had been chosen by readers in the "Add Salsa to the Diario" contest the paper ran in recent weeks. Readers could choose from among three names favored by focus groups last fall: Diario Contigo, Diario Noticias, and Diario San Diego.
"Diario San Diego responds to the voice of our community which actively participated in the selection of the new name among three choices that better represented them. The answer was explicit and clear, for Diario San Diego, Voice of Our Community will fully identify the feelings of the increasingly number of Hispanic readers in our region," Healy said in a statement.
The newspaper was also responding to the settlement of the lawsuit filed in 2003 by Latina & Associates, publisher of the 90,000-free distribution weekly El Latino. El Latino accused Diario Latino of unlawful use of its trademark in unfair competition.
Healy, a longtime publisher in Mexico, launched the Spanish-language daily, his first in the U.S., in October 2003.
