By: E&P Staff An informal E&P survey of today's front pages in dozens of leading newspapers around the country shows that at least one out of three featured photographs of gay couples getting legally married or celebrating afterward in Massachusetts.
For some reason, the vast majority of photos showed lesbian couples, not males. Only two major dailies, the Chicago Tribune and The Boston Globe, showed couples (female) kissing on the front page, and The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., showed two women on the verge of kissing.
Most commonly featured was a wire service photo of two women in white waving as they left a church (it took up nearly the entire front page of Denver's Rocky Mountain News) or two other women in the midst of a wedding ceremony. Some photos showed couples with their children.
The Oregonian in Portland featured the Massachusetts wedding story as its banner head -- with no front-page photo at all. The Arizona Republic of Phoenix featured a photo of a protest against weddings for same-sex couples.
Among the papers that did not run photos relating to this story on the front page: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution; the Los Angeles Times; The Seattle Times; The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Orange County Register of Santa Ana, Calif.; The Cincinnati Enquirer; The Denver Post; the Detroit Free Press; and the San Antonio (Texas) Express-News.
