PAULINE'S PICKS: Alex Beam Acts Out Hate Mail on Podcast

By: Pauline Millard You can't please all the people all the time and anyone who has ever written a newspaper column knows that all too well. No matter what opinion or side you may take, the opposing view is always going to have something to say.

When hate mail in unavoidable, the best you can do is have a laugh about it, as Alex Beam at does. Each month he rounds up the letters that he's gotten and has staffers read them -- often in character -- during his monthly podcast.

It's a neat twist to the Letters section of a newspaper, especially as newspaper space keeps shrinking. As funny as they are, though, the podcasts can run a little long. The July letters, for instance, ran for 20 minutes.

Has your paper tried anything new with its Letters section? I'd love to know.
