By: Pauline Millard We all know how important environmentalism is these days, but it's such a vast area that sometimes it's hard to know where to start. Are forests more important than the ozone layer? What about renewable resources? Have we
really saved the Whales?
Today I came across a multimedia project that takes a look at the most vast natural resource that we have --
our oceans. The LATimes.com went around the world and looked at the health of the oceans and reported back in this five part series.
One of the strengths of this piece is how it broke down the different issues affecting different parts of the world. Some fisherman have seen issues with Lyngbya, which is a toxic algae. Other zoologists have had to rescue and eventually euthanize sea lions that have been poisoned by domoic acid that for some reason is creeping through the water.
There's another great section about how plastics are washing up on shore and killing young birds, who accidently eat small parts. If you've ever wanted to know what the inside of a bird's stomach looks like, this is the video for you!
There are also extensive photo galleries and graphics which help further underline the problem.
All in all, I tip my hat to the LATimes.com for taking a huge issue, the health of our oceans, and breaking it down into bite-sized pieces for readers to enjoy.
Has your paper tackles an environmental issue? I'd love to see it.
