By: Pauline Millard Once again I'm on a nature kick today, this time looking at a special project the Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal put together about
invasive species in the area.
The web site offers one-stop access to published stories, multimedia (including videos, photo galleries, documents), teaching tools, related wire stories, a resource list, and ways people can help stop the spread and a database of invasive species in Oregon.
It started in September with a general overview of how invasives affect the state. Every month through June it will focus on a different type of invasive species and their effects in Oregon.
There is a database, which is a Wiki format, which features nearly 300 entries and will be updated with new species and changes to current entries.
The project is also a huge public service, since there was no compiled list of all invasive species in Oregon before this database was created. The paper is now working with the Invasive Species Council of Oregon so that they can utilize the database and other elements of the site for public education.
Overall, it's a great project that both educates readers about environmentalism and keeps it local, which seems to be a trend with online newspaper projects. The videos are all really well edited and don't feel like learning tools, which they are.
