By: Pauline Millard Election years bring out all sorts of analysis. Voting records, foreign and domestic policies, even college grades are scrutenized in an effort to determine if a candidate is worthy of office.
But what about fashion? If clothes make the man (or woman) why not take a closer look at what candidates wear while out on the stump?
The Washington Post put together a quick audio slideshow that
deconstructs Barack Obama's fashion choices. Surfacely it seems that Obama is almost always wearing the same dark suit, and often without a tie. Robin Givhan and Nancy Donaldson look closer to see what these vestments signify. According to them, it shows that Obama is a modern leader, echoing the relaxed but still professional mindset of the American workforce.
This project is a great example of what to do with all the photos a newspaper has of a candidate that could never be used all at once in a paper. The shots are also perfectly timed to each point that Givhan and Donaldson make, which is a trick that doesn't translate well into print. Overall, it's a great use of the very simple technology involved in making audio slideshows, not to mention an effective way to tell a story.
