Pay Cuts, Jobs Lost at 'Omaha World-Herald'

By: The Omaha World-Herald has laid off 38 employees, about 5 percent of its work force.

Spokesman Joel Long wouldn't say Tuesday how many of those jobs were in the newsroom. The newspaper also announced Tuesday an across-the-board pay cut of 5 percent and suspension of employer matches to its 401(k) retirement plan.

Newspapers around the country are dealing with deepening recession, adding to struggles caused by declining readership and lost advertising dollars.

The employee-owned World-Herald laid off 50 employees in November.

The newspaper has a daily circulation of 168,391, and a Sunday circulation of 194,689. The newspaper eliminated one of its five daily editions last month and stopped same-day delivery in much of western Nebraska.
