By: E&P Staff As the 40-year-old "A Charlie Brown Christmas" airs once again Tuesday night, the "Peanuts" property continues to earn many millions for the estate of the late Charles Schulz.
ABC-TV is charging advertisers as much as $200,000 per 30 seconds to run commercials with the animated special, according to a Tuesday Los Angeles Times article, which added that some advertisers had to be turned away.
Schulz, who died in 2000, was second to Elvis Presley on Forbes' magazine's recent list of the top-earning deceased celebrities -- earning $35 million during the past year. And the late cartoonist's "Peanuts" creation accounts for more than 90% of United Media's licensing revenue, wrote Meg James in the Times story. There's "Peanuts" clothing, toys, stuffed animals, greeting cards, cosmetics, cell phones, and much more.
Some products -- such as a book, music CD, puzzle, and $24 "pathetic Christmas tree" -- are being sold to mark the 40th anniversary of "A Charlie Brown Christmas."
