'Pearls' In, 'Marvin' Out at 'The Virginian-Pilot'

By: E&P Staff "Pearls Before Swine" will start running Nov. 3 in The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va.

Stephan Pastis' United Media comic will replace Tom Armstrong's "Marvin." The King Features Syndicate strip lost out when the newspaper asked readers to tell them their least-favorite comic.

The Virginian-Pilot also decided to keep "For Better or For Worse" by the semi-retired Lynn Johnston of Universal Press Syndicate "because so many readers defended it."

In addition, the paper said it's trying to get "Pickles" (Brian Crane/Washington Post Writers Group) and "Zits" (Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman/King) to replace Berkeley Breathed's Sunday-only "Opus" after that WPWG strip ends Nov. 2.

What can a self-driving car teach news publishers about AI? Quite a lot, according to Guy Tasaka. How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
