By: Mark Fitzgerald Journal Register stock slid to one cent a share in Over-The-Counter trading Friday.
It wasn't a steep slide for the troubled publisher: its stock (PINK SHEETS: JRCO.PK) opened the trading session at just two cents a share.
Friday's trading volume was huge as 1.4 million shares changed hands by 2:25 EDT, more than three times the average daily trading in the past three months. At a penny a share, the publisher of 22 daillies and nearly 300 other papers has a market capitalization of just $590,000.
Journal Register has filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to deregister its stock. It has also obtained permission from lenders to stop making interest payments on its $650 million in debt.
Journal Register's vice president, finance, Gary Struening, did not immediately return a phone message from E&P.
