Pets, Celebrations Are New Online Legacies

By: E&P Staff Legacy.com is expanding beyond its bread and butter of obituaries. The Evanston, Ill.-based company announced two new categories Monday: pet classifieds and celebrations.

The site has rolled out the two categories in several markets since the beginning of the year. The Star Tribune in Minneapolis is piloting the pets product, which gives newspapers an online marketplace for the sale of pets and related products.

The celebrations site, being tested at the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, can include engagement, wedding, anniversary, birth, and other announcements.

Legacy.com President and CEO Stopher Bartol called pets and celebrations "two important, but often overlooked categories."

The company also announced that beginning in July, it will expand its online obituary program to allow users to upload photos, text, and audio.

Legacy.com powers obit sections for over 160 newspapers. The Tribune Co. of Chicago is among its investors.
