By: Joann Loviglio, Associated Press Writer (AP) Robert J. Rosenthal, executive editor of
The Philadelphia Inquirer, resigned Tuesday amid staff cutbacks and disagreements over how the newspaper should be trying to attract new readers.
"There was a difference of opinion on some strategies," Rosenthal said in a statement posted on the
Inquirer's Web site Tuesday. "It became harder and harder for me to be able to do what I do best, and it became time for a new leader."
Walker Lundy, editor of the
St. Paul Pioneer Press for 11 years, was named Rosenthal's replacement. Both papers are owned by Knight Ridder.
Rosenthal, for 18 years a reporter and editor at the
Inquirer, became the newspaper's editor and executive vice president of Philadelphia Newspapers Inc. in January 1998.
Rosenthal spent eight years as a reporter, four as the
Inquirer's Africa correspondent, and later became foreign editor and city editor before moving up the ranks as assistant and associate managing editor.
