PHILADELPHIA (September 29, 2011) – The news just got better for the best sports town in America.

On Saturday, October 1, Philadelphia Media Network Inc. (PMN) will officially launch Philadelphia SportsWeek to cover the region’s shared passion for sports in a way that goes beyond the field of play, marrying the hallmarks of the Philadelphia Daily News' outstanding sports coverage and award-winning columnists and reporters, with the best elements of a weekly magazine.  In a special contributor role, Charles Barkley will provide a weekly advice column for readers, providing the candor and humor that Philadelphians have come to expect from this 11-time NBA All-Star and Hall of Fame player.

“The creation and launch of SportsWeek is a great moment in Philadelphia sports.  This city deserves a great weekly publication to chronicle and document our shared highs and, heaven forbid, our shared lows,” said Larry Platt, Editor of the Philadelphia Daily News.  “Our goal is to make SportsWeek the bible of Philadelphia sports, equally accessible to both rabid and casual fans.”

“Philadelphia has the most passionate and knowledgeable sports fans in the country, fans that warrant an equally passionate and insightful publication,” said Greg Osberg, PMN Publisher and CEO.  “SportsWeek’s mix of in-depth player interviews, analysis, and sports entertainment and lifestyle coverage is something readers are not going to find anywhere else.“

Features of the bold new tabloid, published each Saturday, will include:

·
Articles that tell the inside story of the “players” in Philadelphia sports, starting with this week’s cover story on the mad genius of Charlie Manuel, which has inspired players, fans, and even some of the region’s leading CEOs.

·         Regular contributions from a wide variety of voices, including Mark Kram, baseball beat man David Murphy, and provocative contributions from A.J. Daulerio, the infamous Philly native who is editor of Deadspin.com, as well as the literary stylings of WIP's Anthony Gargano.  And of course, Hall of Fame columnist Bill Conlin will be featured regularly.

·         A sports travel section offering the “Philly Nation” advice on where to stay and the best bars to visit on road trips.

·         Intimate moments with some of the region’s favorite professional athletes – go ahead and guess what Bernard Hopkins does to relax!

·         A new advice column by Charles Barkley who will be our equivalent of Dear Abby - if Dear Abby were a foulmouthed jock.

The launch of the print publication will coincide with the launch of www.phillysportsweek.com, which will provide fans with the opportunity to interact with one another, share their thoughts with the experts, and sound off on the latest victories (and losses) throughout the week.  Philadelphia SportsWeek is powered by the Philadelphia Daily News and will launch with a special introductory discounted price of $1 on newsstands. Home delivery subscriptions are also available by calling 1 800-834-3267.
