By: Members of one union at Philadelphia's two biggest daily newspapers have agreed to forgo a $25-a-week raise they were scheduled to receive on Sept. 1.
The vote Sunday by members of Teamsters Local 628 was 193-7.
The request by Philadelphia Media Holdings LLC -- the owner of the two newspapers -- is a cost-cutting measure in the face of declining revenue that has afflicted newspapers nationwide.
Leaders of Local 628 say the workers at The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News want to do what they can to help preserve their jobs.
Local 628, which represents drivers and other workers, is the first of 11 unions at the company to approve the request. All must vote on it since it would mean amending the contract.
