By: E&P Staff The Philadelphia Inquirer has named two co-managing editors: One is a newcomer to the paper, while the other has been promoted.
Mike Leary joins the Inquirer from The Sun in Baltimore, where he was assistant managing editor for metro news. Leary was a national and international correspondent for the Inquirer in the 1980s, and held various editing positions.
Sandra Long, who most recently served as deputy managing editor, is promoted to the new position. Long joined the Inquirer as a correspondent in 1983, after working as an editorial writer at the Philadelphia Bulletin. She is a founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Leary will oversee newsgathering operations. while Long will be responsible for production-related matters; she will serve as the newsroom liaison with the Inquirer's business operations.
The two succeed Anne Gordon, who announced in April that she was leaving the paper to join a private-investment firm.
