Philly 'Metro' Denies Its Demise

Posted
By: E&P Staff The parent company of the Philadelphia Metro newspaper has denied rumors that the paper had ceased publication following a prolonged absence from newsstands over the Fourth of July holiday.

"We decided to take a few days off," Yggers "Julius" Mortensen, chief executive of Seabay Internation, told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "I can confirm that we're not closing down." Mortensen went on to say that the paper would resume its normal publication schedule on July 9.

According to Metro employees interviewed by the Inquirer, the paper announced in its July 2 edition that it was taking a week off to celebrate Independence Day. However, that announcement was not repeated on the Metro's Web site or its telephone answering system, which forwarded calls from curious readers to various voice mail boxes.

The rumors about Metro come just one month after a competing free daily, the Philadelphia Bulletin, closed after five years of publication. Mortensen told the Inquirer that the decision to suspend daily publication was "quite regular" and was "no reflection" on the newspaper's health.

Metro publishes free newspapers five days a week in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. The Boston edition also suspended publication for the 4th of July holiday.
