By: E&P Staff "Pickles" by Brian Crane of the Washington Post Writers Group won a Wichita Eagle comics poll that drew about 5,000 reader responses.
Finishing second was Lynn Johnston's "For Better or For Worse" -- the Universal Press Syndicate strip that has won previous Eagle surveys.
The rest of the top five included three King Features Syndicate comics: "Baby Blues" by Jerry Scott and Rick Kirkman, "Zits" by Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman, and "Blondie" by Dean Young and John Marshall.
Meanwhile, the Eagle announced that it's dropping "Peanuts" reruns, "One Big Happy," "Shoe," and "Slylock Fox." The Kansas paper said of "Peanuts": "The strip, though beloved, hasn't been freshly drawn since creator Charles Schulz died in 2000, and the classic repeats that have been running are available in countless 'Peanuts' books."
Over the next few weeks, readers will see potential replacements -- including "Bizarro," "Bliss," "Cow and Boy," "Mac King's Magic in a Minute," "Mother Goose & Grimm," "Over the Hedge," "Pearls Before Swine," "Sherman's Lagoon," and "Six Chix." The Eagle's official new comics lineup is slated to debut in mid-September.
The poll results were mentioned on Alan Gardner's DailyCartoonist.com and Tom Spurgeon's ComicsReporter.com.
